E-Commerce Shipping Guide
Design shipping that you can fulfill: zones, packaging, dimensional weight, rate cards, returns, COD logistics and the messages customers see before they pay.

Shipping is simultaneously a primary operational cost driver and a fundamental conversion catalyst. These articles break down rate design, dimensional weight calculations, 3PL fulfillment strategies, reverse logistics management, and carrier tracking communications.
Offering 'free shipping' is a proven conversion driver, but shipping is never free to the merchant. The cost must be systematically absorbed into retail price points or gated behind an Average Order Value threshold (e.g., 'Free shipping on orders over $75'). Setting the threshold 15% to 25% above your baseline AOV motivates shoppers to add extra items to their cart, covering freight costs through incremental gross margin.
Carriers calculate shipping charges based on greater of actual weight versus dimensional (volumetric) weight: (Length × Width × Height) ÷ Volumetric Divisor. Shipping lightweight goods in oversized boxes leads to catastrophic carrier fee penalties. Implementing right-sized custom packaging and automated packaging algorithms reduces both freight surcharges and damaged goods claims.
Product returns represent a massive margin drain, particularly in apparel and consumer electronics where return rates can exceed 20% to 30%. Establishing clear return policies, offering self-service return portals, encouraging store credit exchanges over refunds, and partnering with reverse logistics aggregators keeps restocking costs under control.

Shipping is rates, dimensional weight, SLAs and who pays. Rate shopping and packaging decide landed cost more often than the carrier brand on the box.

Calculate volumetric dimensional weight, billable freight charges, and packaging overhead for courier and postal shipments.
Calculate your current Average Order Value (AOV) and average shipping cost. Set your free shipping threshold approximately 15% to 25% above your average AOV. For instance, if your average order is $60 and gross margin is 50%, setting an $80 threshold encourages shoppers to add another $20 item, generating $10 in gross profit to absorb the shipping expense.
Dimensional weight reflects package density and the space it occupies in carrier cargo vehicles. It is calculated by multiplying box dimensions (L × W × H) and dividing by a carrier divisor (typically 139 for domestic US or 5000 in metric centimeters). Carriers bill for whichever is greater: actual scale weight or dimensional weight.
Brands typically transition to a Third-Party Logistics (3PL) provider when daily order volume reaches 20 to 50 orders per day consistently, when warehousing space becomes constrained, or when distributed regional fulfillment is necessary to achieve competitive 2-day delivery transit times.
Vague delivery promises like 'Standard Shipping' create anxiety and cause shoppers to hesitate. Displaying explicit delivery date estimates (e.g., 'Arrives by Thursday, Sep 10') directly on product pages and checkout steps significantly increases buyer confidence and checkout completion rates.
